"Former Miramax exec Jack Lechner proclaims the death of the indie as we know it."
Lechner's speech pays homage to "indie" films but also proclaims the death of the successful independent film as we know it. If what he has said is true, then Hollywood will hopefully begin to make movies with much more meaning and sincerity. No matter what, this should make any aspiring filmmaker aware of the challenge he or she faces with every movie to create a wholly original piece.
One thing to keep in mind when you read this article: Lechner tries to discourage people from making movies unless they are making something that is totally different. Maybe your first movie will NOT be totally different. One thing that I have been told is to copy artists I admire in my first works. In every project I will take from each artist a few ideas and mix them with my own, and as my craft matures I will develop a style unique to me. -Ian Ragsdale
